Find a Texas Department of Motor Vehicle Office

The Texas DPS (also known as the DMV) is responsible for issuing learner permits and driver licenses. You'll need to visit the DPS office for new permits, licenses, or renewals, and to take the permit and driving tests. Check the operating hours of your local Texas DMV office before visiting. Whether you're in Austin, Houston, El Paso, Amarillo, or anywhere in between, there's a DPS office nearby.

Get Your Texas Driver License or Permit

To get your Texas learner's permit and driver's license, take a state-approved driver education course like Aceable. After finishing the course, pass a written test to get an instruction permit. Under 18s need it to start driving with an adult; over 18 can then take the DMV driving test for a full license. Teens under 18 must hold their permit for 6 months before the driving test. Learn more about Texas driving permits and licenses by visiting our guide.
